Quebec had 12 residential schools where many abuses were inflicted, as survivors told us. They are asking for excavation searches to be organized. Lawyer David Schulze, who is defending dozens of Cree survivors from James Bay, points out that Aboriginal children from Quebec were also sent in large numbers to residential schools in neighbouring provinces before 1950. Families may therefore have to look elsewhere for their bodies.
SASKATOON — Amid calls for accountability and compensation for child deaths at residential schools, lawyers say it’s unlikely Indigenous families will receive it from the government any time soon, especially since there has been no national inquiry yet into the deaths.
Between 1975 and 1991, Anicinapek from the Kitcisakik community were sent to the Pavillon Notre-Dame-de-la-Route residence in Louvicourt. This week, members of the community filed a class action against the Attorney General of Canada and the Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Company of Canada for the abuse they allegedly suffered in this residence.
